A new, multi-million-dollar eco-friendly logistics hub in South Auckland is poised to strengthen access to steel construction resources essential for New Zealand’s infrastructure and renewable energy sectors.
Government figures indicate that over $120 billion is projected for infrastructure investments by the Crown, Crown entities, and KiwiRail in the next five years, with priorities in transport, regional infrastructure, resilience planning, and public facilities like schools.
Dean Brown, CEO of Asmuss Group, highlights that with over 1,400 infrastructure projects valued at $10 million or more anticipated, enhancing the construction supply chain is critical for timely project completion.
The $25 million, 15,400 square metre facility at Drury South Crossing can accommodate over 12,000 tonnes of steel, nearly double the volume used for Auckland’s Harbour Bridge.
“New Zealand relies heavily on imported structural steel, and this facility enhances rapid distribution and efficiency to prevent delays,” Brown explains.
“The logistics centre’s design enables high-volume steel movement across multiple bays, bolstering operational efficiency and delivery precision.
“We can unload up to 1,000 tonnes of steel—around 42 truckloads—in days, increasing supply chain resilience and reducing bottlenecks,” he says.
The facility is equipped with seven advanced gantry cranes, each 32 metres wide and designed to transport steel safely while achieving a 35% efficiency gain over previous warehouses. The new site consolidates Asmuss’s logistics into one hub, optimising operations and supporting the anticipated demand for steel as major projects ramp up.
Drury was selected from over 20 regional sites, with location modelling identifying it as strategically advantageous within the golden triangle for transport efficiency.
Brown notes that improving funding conditions could boost infrastructure activity, as Government initiatives streamline investment legislation.
“Asmuss has a vital role in New Zealand’s economic recovery, and our logistics hub investment enables us to further support construction, manufacturing, and the emerging renewable energy sector.”
With a legacy of over 100 years supporting New Zealand’s infrastructure, Brown underscores Asmuss’s commitment to providing essential resources for the next generation of projects, thus contributing to the country’s long-term economic resilience and sustainability.
Drury South Crossing CEO, Stephen Hughes, notes a shift towards distribution centralisation by large-scale operators. Drury is rapidly evolving into one of Auckland’s largest distribution zones.
“We’re seeing more businesses consolidate operations to one hub, which cuts operational costs.
“Specialised facilities, like Asmuss’s 5 Green Star-rated building, require greenfield locations to allow bespoke design, and demand for such spaces has led to significant investment in the area,” he says.
Hughes highlights that companies benefit from accessing a local workforce keen to avoid commutes to Auckland’s centre.
